Favorite/Least Favorite Thing About Your Car?

Simple. Name your car. Post a picture, if you want. What is your favorite and least favorite thing about it?

Mine is, as you know, a 2008 Mazda3 S Touring.

Kinja'd!!!

My favorite thing about it: It’s fun to drive. Seriously. I can toss this thing around corners all day long and not get bored. It’s super agile and very easy to control. Having owned it for six years, I’ve learned its limits and I know exactly how hard to push it without losing control. It’s fun to drive a slow car fast. Although this car isn’t slow. It’s plenty quick for what it is.

Least favorite thing: The A/C is perfectly adequate (and there’s nothing wrong with it, I checked it), but it isn’t crazy powerful. Mazdas in general sort of have weak-ish air conditioners. And my fat ass is hot natured, so I like the A/C to blow me away.

No exhaust systems or chips for my 2.8 A4. 2 valves per cylinder means breathing problems and therefore no chips or any performance goodies for the most part.

Favourite: Fun to drive since it’s so light and chuckable. Feels more mechanical than most modern cars.

Least favourite: Has no room in it whatsoever. Front seat passengers get a good amount of room but back seat is basically useless and boot isn’t much better.

We used to break Mazda 3 AC units all the time as fleet cars in the hot summers of western Idaho. We just overworked them for too long, and they would go kaput.

Ironically, the car it’s replacing was the complete opposite. I liked that the IS 300 wasn't as common but it became way too slow for me.

Good: It’s reliable, has 3 pedals, and has a reasonable amount of utility with the seats folded down.

Bad: Underpowered. Boring as all fuck in every possible way.

1969 IH Scout 800A

Good: It makes me smile every time I drive it. It gets the good kind of attention when I’m out in it. It’s surprisingly reliable for a 46 year old car.

Bad: With no top, it’s only drivable when it’s dry and not too cold or hot.

Subaru BRZ. You all know what it looks like.

Favorite: Fun to drive. I don’t care if it’s supposedly underpowered - I can’t even use all the power it does have on the street regularly, and it handles and stops great.

Least favorite: Absolutely no feeling through the clutch. Even now I botch shifts occasionally because there’s just no feedback like in every other stick shift car I’ve ever driven.

2013 Chevy Volt - too many favorite things, but overall it’s the way it drives. Electric motors are just awesome. So much fun, especially with the grippy MPSS tires I put on and how flat it corners. Never worried about a shift at an odd time while pushing it through an offramp, etc.

Least favorite thing: that they don’t make a larger car with this drivetrain.

Okay, since that’s not about this car, even after two years I can’t believe how craptastic the radio/heater controls are. Sounds fine, but the controls blow big chunks everywhere.

2003 GMC Yukon

Favourite: Feels like it has way more power than what it’s rated at (295hp/330lb-ft). Also like that it has a very small turning radius for how big it is. Interior is quieter than the Jetta.

Least: Fuel mileage really isn’t that great (duh!) and I don’t like that’s it’s designed to use the rear brakes more than the fronts.

——————————————————————-

2013 VW Jetta TDI

Favourite: Fuel mileage (again, duh!), the brown paint and the maneuverability.

Least: Feels much cheaper than the previous gen Jetta and those fucking trunk hinges are horrible. Road noise can be pretty intrusive on the highway.

——————————————————————-

2012 Ford Focus Titanium Hatch

Favourite: Handles itself pretty good around corners, sporty design is very attractive.

Least: Bad (!!) rear visibility, not very reliable and of course MyFordTouch. I have a lot more issues with it but I’ll save that for another day.

My truck’s transfer case/ transmission is busted to high hell! When the transmission is in first gear all you hear is BWAAKACHUCKBWAAAACUCKBWAHHH! However once it gets to second you don’t hear anything. Also if you so much of think of putting 4wd on it just permanently sings you the song of it’s people no matter what gear it’s in. I would fix this but sadly I have no money to. Also because it isn’t an issue 99% of the time but it still annoys me. Is this an issue with the transmission or the transfer case?

The usurped former Jalopnik Special

Kinja'd!!!

Likes: Sharp, neutral-on-the-side-of-oversteer handling, comfort, interior quality (ST1), versatility, looks, torque, surprisingly good audio system with the almighty bluetooth. The wipers make me smile.

Dislikes: Gas tank is tiny- 270 mile range at best. Turning radius is larger than a truck, or even an AWD luxury sedan. Stereo does not display track information over bluetooth unless specifically using the spotify app in-car, which requires going through about three menus every time you start the car. Stereo will default either to USB or to FM if it can’t connect to your phone within an instant of starting up.

Overall I love it; it’s just those little niggles that drive me nuts when I suddenly have mariachi blasting out of the speakers.

Favourite thing? It’s a “cool” car. It’s no Mustang or Corvette or Skyline, but for a economy car, it’s one of the coolest. Everyone in my age group (18-19-20) loves Honda Civics, they are punchy and fun.

Least Favourite? There is alot I don’t like since it’s overall a downgrade from my Camry. My front speakers don’t work. I’d probably say my least favoruite is how it’s an automatic. Alot of people are like “it’s cool! do stuff to it!... oh wait, its an automatic... sell it.” It’s embarrassing.

Fun!

Kinja'd!!!

+ Everything about aggressive acceleration. The noise, the terror, the feel of that shift to 2nd.

- Scares the living shit out of me.

Kinja'd!!!

+ How practical it is. It’s a pure and precise performance machine, and it does it while still being comfortable and having a big trunk.

- I had to stop DDing it because I don’t have the self control to not drive it fast. Many tickets were acquired.

Kinja'd!!!

+ Top-down cruising. Gotta have a drop top in San Diego.

- I’m a pretty tall dude with pretty long legs. My left knee hits the bottom of the dash every time I shift, and I start getting cramps after about 20 minutes in the driver’s seat.

Kinja'd!!!

+ Driving this thing makes me feel like a fucking BOSS.

- No radio.

Kinja'd!!!

+ Super easy and reliable. I bought it from the state, so it’s in perfect mechanical condition, and the entire interior is waterproofed, so I can just hose it out.

- Doesn’t tow for shit.

Kinja'd!!!

+ It was my grandpa’s truck, and I enjoy reflecting on good times with grandpa every time I drive it.

- It needs a bunch of work, including a new motor. I wince every time I think about how much time and money I’m about to drop on this thing.

Kinja'd!!!

+ Perfect Baja truck. Super capable off-road, and stays reliable no matter how much I beat the shit out of it. (pictured towing 12,000 pounds worth of boat and trailer, almost 3x the towing capacity)

- The approach angle sucks.

Kinja'd!!!

+ I love cruising in this thing. It’s big, it’s loud and grumbley (454), and it’s like riding on a cloud.

- 2wd. I hate 2wd.

Unpictured ‘14 CTS V-Sport

+ It’s a nice balance between performance and comfort. It doesn’t encourage me to drive like a maniac, but if I need to teach some punk in a Mustang GT a little something about drag racing, it’s got the balls for it.

- Too much technology. In manual-mode it shifts for you if your RPMs get on the low or high side. Fuck you, Cadillac. When I say I want 2nd, I fucking want 2nd.

Unpictured ‘93 Ford Exploder

+ It’s got more room for people and gear than the Suzuki Samurai it replaced.

- Everything else about it. I hate this truck. Fuck this truck.

Favorite - It’s just so damn fun to drive. It’s quick and can handle turns exceptionally well (it is far from stock form performance-wise).

Least Favorite - While it can launch from a dead stop like a bat out of hell, I rarely do it because of the shock it puts on the drive-train (126k and counting on the OEM transmission. Clutches? Well... I’ve been through several of those).

I DD a 2012 Ford Focus SE 5-speed.

Favorite thing: Since I’ve never pushed it hard (I really should autocross it at some point this summer), I’d say that my favorite thing about it is how well it rides during my commute. It takes bumps pretty well - I have to run into something particularly bad in order for the resulting bump to feel jarring at all. Perhaps it’s nothing special by itself, but I consider it a point of pride in comparison to my mom’s 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport; said Hyundai is surprisingly stiff over bumps for a crossover that cost over twice as much as the Focus out-the-door.

Least favorite thing: There are a few different things that I don’t like about the Focus... if I had to pick one, I’d say it’s the feel of the clutch pedal. The friction point feels kinda vague - I wonder if I could improve it by finding and removing the assistance spring, like FoST and S550 owners seem to be doing.

96 I30

best: the features, interior has held up well for 20 years and 250k (I bought it recently, not new), decent but not great aftermarket support, classic 90s Japanese reliability, lots of room inside and rather light for its size

worst: transverse v6 hard to work on, gotta do the valve cover gaskets, and the knock sensor is difficult as well since it’s under the intake manifold! The back seat doesn’t fold, and one of the doors won’t open anymore because of the linkage inside or the lock mechanism is broken, and I can’t take the door apart because you have to open the door first!

1996 Volvo 850R wagon (my daily driver):

Kinja'd!!!

Favourite: For such a practical car, it’s stupidly fast (at least once you wait for the turbo lag to subside). It’ll pass pretty much anything, at any speed, with no effort whatsoever.

Least favourite: The ride is appallingly bad, and while it grips better than a big FWD car has any right to do, it still doesn’t handle well enough to really justify the absurdly-stiff suspension.

2011 VW Golf 2.5 (my wife’s car):

Kinja'd!!!

Favourite: Very fun to drive for a non-sporty model with an automatic transmission, and the 2.5 engine has a remarkable amount of go.

Least favourite: Some really boneheaded design decisions ruin its otherwise excellent interior for me. The AC controls are a travesty, and whoever designed the tilt front seats had obviously never had to actually get into the back seat of a two-door car.

1985 VW Scirocco:

Kinja'd!!!

Favourite: With under 90hp and crazy-sharp handling, you can drive it flat-out all the time and not get thrown in jail. It’s like a street-legal go-kart.

Least favourite: You have to drive it flat-out all the time to get anywhere. Driving a go-kart to work would get old fast.

1956 MGA Roadster:

Kinja'd!!!

Favourite: Huge amounts of character, perfectly-balanced handling, and an eager (if low-powered) drivetrain make even a trip to the shops a grin-inducing experience.

Least favourite: Ludicrously uncivilised. Hot, smelly, uncomfortable and loud. As far as creature comforts go, you get seats and a windscreen, and that’s about it. No side windows, roof or carpets, and there’s no luggage space to speak of.

Least favorite: steering feel the is incredibly soft.

E90 328i

Favorite: fucking awesome steering feel, handling is great, and the inline six sounds great while being very reliable.

Least favorite: besides nav and heated seats, interior is boring (lightly optioned) and its auto.

- I always put my elbow in the same spot on the center console when I’m driving. Over the years, the leather has dried up and cracked on the spot where my elbow sits. So now the cracked leather scrapes my elbow.

Favorite thing: the buttery smooth 6-speed

Least favorite: it’s got LRR tires on it that are brand new. I’d replace them, but my money is being used for things right now like school loans and mortgages. I can’t justify replacing brand new tires just because I don’t like them.

Kinja'd!!!

Favorite thing: the drive! Low to the ground, super light, engine behind the driver, pop up headlights!

Least favorite: I don’t like to drive it on the highway.

2010 Mazda3 s Touring hatchback here. *fist bumps OP*

Kinja'd!!!

Picture from way back in February when I bought it.

Favorite thing: Again, it’s bloody fun to drive for a basic, un-sporty I4 hatchback. I always call Mazda the manchild of the auto industry, and with good reason. This is the car you buy when you need something frugal and “responsible” (and dare I say *gasp* normal ) to keep up images with your significant other and/or mother, but you still dream of owning an NA Miata.

Least favorite thing: The engine is neither powerful nor particularly economical. It makes a claimed 167hp at the crank, and I seem to average around 24mpg. I’m not a terribly crazy driver, either - my old FG2 Civic could do 41mpg with my exact driving style. And it had 32 more horsepower AND a nicer power curve.

What I’m saying is, someone go K20 swap a Mazda3.

2003 Mazda6 S V6.

Favorites: Safer and quieter than the 1990 Volvo 760 wagon it replaced, doesn't burn oil, wife approves of it.

Least favorites: Radio/HVAC display doesn't always work, quarter panels' wheel wells are rusting, not a wagon.

I loathe the control layout of the Volt. It’s an incomprehensible mess. The available gray field is nice but the layout is bonkers, like they took it directly from a concept car in a bad way. I also hate the arch that surrounds the gear selector in Park (I have large hands and bang them on it every time) and the smooth plastic panels on the front (and only the front, WTF?) interior door panels, which GM foolishly copied for the Camaro.

The infotainment system is also fairly wretched, but that’s par for the course for GM.

I like the idea of the Volt, and the front 3/4 aren’t bad-looking (minus the fake DLOs), but it suffers from typical GM slipshod execution. The ELR resolves a few of the Volt’s missteps, but not enough to justify its nearly-double price tag.

Also dislike the location and size of the “dead pedal”, the left footrest in the driver’s doorbell. It’s too small and too far away - that is, forward - and the accidental footrest winds up being the plastic fuse panel cover on the side bulkhead, which in my wife’s newer 6 has come loose, but my car’s is still intact. I need to figure out some sort of extension to be a functional footrest that moves out of the way if/when I need to access the fuse panel.

+ Mind-blowingly reliable. It’s the only thing USB owned out of like 10 cars that has never not started. It’s even seized a solenoid, but I hit it with a hammer and it started that time too. I trust this truck more than I trust myself.

- The looseness of the steering gets tiresome sometimes. And my mechanic has advised me to replace none of the components unless they actually break since they apparently came new with awful steering.

They are quite complicated. There’s even a warning engraved in the cowl telling you not to put your hands near the hinge. They’re also the wrong way round, set up for a LHD car but mine is RHD.

Yes, the 3 isn’t exactly a fuel miser (well, the newer SkyActiv ones are but that’s all). My 2.3 (basically your 2.5 with less displacement) averages 25 city and I have gotten 35 highway before but that was a freak occurrence. Usually on longer trips, I average 30-31. Not terrible, but not amazing, either.

Favorite: The ease at which I can hoon it. I’ve almost never felt out of control of the car, even in the snow.

2010 Volvo S40 T5 R-Design

Pros: Agile, snappy, AWD. Excellent mountain runner, comfortable as hell and attractive to boot.

Cons: Ludicrously small trunk, HVAC has a mind of its own, 230hp is nice but not quite enough.

1995 Dodge Dakota SLT 5.2 5MT 4x4

Pros: It’s a goddamn 5 speed 4x4 V8 pickup. Glasspack for fun throttle sounds. Tows a surprising amount for a little truck. Paid nearly nothing for it.

Cons: Brakes suck, seats suck, center console sucks, suspension sucks, IFS with no lift options, 230hp is nice but really not enough at all.

1987 Saab 900 SPG

Kinja'd!!!

Pros: Surprisingly fast, handles like a dream, exhaust burble that makes Subarus jealous, 34 MPG, excellent road tripper

Cons: It’s currently dismantled in my driveway :\

Yeah, it’s like 98% the way to have a knock it out of the park concept -> real world car. But that 2% missing is like the wind kicking up and blowing Big Papi’s hit back just enough so the ball bounces off the green monster instead of over it. So annoying that it could and should have been a home run.

I’m used to it now, after 2-1/2 years, but I’m still not _USED_ to it if you know what I mean... I fumble around sometimes wondering which screen something is on, or where a button is, or what that button does, or if I even HAVE a button for that... This just should not be. Everything else I drive I know every button, knob, control, switch within the driver’s reach within 30 minutes of getting behind the wheel. This one, 36,000 miles later and I’m still puzzled from time to time. Not that it’s ever stopped me from getting done what I need to do, but it’s a hot mess that just shouldn’t be. (wtf is TP anyway, I know it can’t wipe my butt)

I’ve also never gotten used to the voice commands, which is supposed to be their way of saying “We know the buttons are a little iffy, so just tell it what you want instead” - ummm, yeah you are still about a decade early as far as I can tell on the voice controls. Voice commands still suck. For everything.

I know somewhere on the gm-volt forum a guy wrote up all the different voice commands that were possible for the car to recognize. I’ll have to carry a printout with me until I figure out how they work, but darnit, I’m going to try again.

A 454-powered K5 would be pretty nuts. It needs way more than just a motor though. I’m going to need to take the body off and grind down all the rust on the frame, redo the brakes and suspension, and all that crap.

I’m actually kind of torn. It would be cool to lift it a little bit and drop in some kind of built motor. But then, you never see stock K5s anymore, and it would be cool to keep it as close to original as possible because of the sentimental value. Decisions, decisions.

That sounds like an idea, I might have to do the same the few times I need to drive one; the only object I’ve yet encountered in a regular basis that works with voice command is Cortana on my Lumia.

It’s somewhat relieving that GM has put so much focus on their interiors for their 2015+ models, though while the materials and layout are improved, as is the infotainment (prior MyLink efforts make me want to put a hammer through the dash), they just aren’t quite to the level of the competition. Like you said: it seems 98% good effort, 2% half-ass neglect/idiocy or the much-reviled committee contribution (like the rear ends of pretty much all 2015+ GM NA vehicles that don’t seem to match the car at all).

Sentimentality can mean a lot. An older friend of mine had a K5 he’d had since new and frequently used it for errands, despite the - not even slightly - holes in the doors and rear panels you could not only see through, but put fingers through, or in the case of the passenger door, your forearm. Some drunk driver wound up turning it mostly to powder when it was parked outside my friend’s house, but when the drunk tried to back away and drive off, the body stayed attached like a bear trap and he got stuck in the mud.

Pros: V8, RWD, LSD, Comfortably seats 5 while going sideways, can haul more stuff than my dad’s Ranger, People think I’m a cop (and get out of the way on the highways)

Cons: Automatic, Rusty, Falling Apart, A/C is shot, People think I’m a cop (and drive slow in front of me)
